Dear Dean Gier,
We students at the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre, & Dance ask the university to issue a public apology to Professor Bright Sheng and provide him the opportunity to return as instructor of the undergraduate composition seminar.
Professor Bright Sheng would ideally have had the social awareness to offer the seminar contextualization prior to screening the film of Shakespeare’s Othello starring Laurence Olivier. Beyond an acknowledgement of the racist history of blackface, this contextualization should have brought to light the complicated history that led to Olivier’s donning of black makeup in a play centered on racial dynamics. In addition, Professor Sheng’s decision to show this adaptation was based on the educational intent “to show how the opera composer Giuseppe Verdi had adapted Shakespeare’s play into an opera.” The university failed to recognize this complexity in their response to the controversy.
The university needs students who are brave enough to call out inappropriate behavior. This was apparent in the cases of sexual misconduct exposed at SMTD in 2018, leading to the rightful expulsion of the perpetrators from the university. But the university’s response to the incident involving Professor Sheng has fostered an atmosphere of fear and animosity that is hostile to positive change. When students addressed the Chair because they felt unable to directly approach Professor Sheng, the Chair should have taken responsibility to initiate a conversation. Instead, students and fellow composition faculty, supported by the administration’s statements, encouraged a harmful narrative that Professor Sheng’s actions were racist regardless of his intentions. By failing to take effective and timely action, the university administration allowed sensitive issues to escalate beyond their appropriate scope. The university is therefore directly responsible for the public slander and misrepresentation of Professor Sheng, and must take responsibility to restore his standing as an esteemed and valued member of the SMTD faculty.
As an educational community, we have a responsibility to grow through critique and questioning, but this goal must be approached with respect and compassion for the community members involved instead of defaulting to rejection and denunciation. This university should seek to protect academic freedom, open discussion, and, indeed, a “positive learning environment.” By removing Professor Sheng from his position, however, the university succumbed to sensationalist and reactionary sentiments which threaten to undermine real progress towards the “anti-racist action, diversity, equity and inclusion” that you claim our school is committed to. The current course of action has not only stifled any attempt at productive discussion; it has led to an outrageous shaming of Professor Sheng in the public sphere. Rather than pursuing a mature reconciliation between professor and students by guiding a dialectical process, the university allowed the narrative to be dictated by one side. Simply removing Professor Sheng from the course and reporting the incident to the Office of Equity, Civil Rights, and Title IX is akin to performative activism that does not actually resolve the issues at hand.
We implore you to rectify this issue by mediating the discussions necessary for healing and growth, and by repairing the significant and disproportionate damage to Professor Sheng’s career through a public apology and, if he so desires, ensuring a smooth return to his position as instructor of the undergraduate composition seminar.
Sincerely,
The undersigned.
